There’s a lot that can go into a safe space policy.
That said, sometimes, less is more.
When we talk about making sure that the Mad World Salon Sessions are a safe space, we’re not talking about any place in particular.
What we’re talking about, is that there are folks who have been historically marginalized, who are tired of judgment, unsolicited opinions, and having to explain themselves. Frankly, it’s exhausting. We’re exhausted.
Which is to say, everything you need to know about how we’re going to keep the space safe can be summed up with these two points.
We value evocation. Provocation of any kind is not welcome in this space.
And,
We value freedom of expression, which includes the right to choose what you hear.
We do not acknowledge freedom of expression (or what some folks call free speech) as a tool to pass judgment or share unsolicited and, if I can be honest, unwanted opinions or ideas which continue to marginalize people who already have too much to deal with.
If you don’t share those values, this is not the place for you.
If you do share these values, welcome. You are supported, and respected, and we can’t wait to share with you.
P.S. Policies are imperfect, this one especially. If you have any questions or suggestions to make this space safer for you, email me at sean@madworldtheatre.com.
